Interview with Assyria!

Band: Assyria
Genre: Death Metal / Deathcore

Q: Where does the band name "Assyria" come from?

Assyria was a highly advanced civilization dating back to the 24th and 25th century in 605 BC, they ruled, and took over many empires north of current day Iraq. That's what I base my lyrics on.

Q: Your album, Through The Eyes of a Broken God, recently released. How has the feedback been?

The feedback on the EP release has been pretty great; it really sparked the start of our career as Assyria. We never really imagined the positivity that we could get off a self-produced EP, for only being a band for about 4 to 5 months the EP has showed great success and we are happy that we can bring something to the fans! We wrote, recorded and produced the EP in a month so it doesn’t show the potential that we have to offer.

Q: How is the local metal scene in Salem, OR?

The metal scene isn’t really all too prevalent here in Salem, OR which makes it a real challenge to get our name out their but we have some great friends and sponsors that help us plaster our name outside of our city! We love Salem and Portland, hell we love all of Oregon, there are numerous great bands out there to check out and listen to! There is plenty of bands that deserve more of a calling and fan base, but who knows maybe there will be a shift where heavier music .

Q: Which bands did you grow up listening to, and does those bands play an influence on your music now?

Brennan: I grew up listening good old fashion Metaliica, Slayer, Testament and a lot of the good old fashion 80’s bands for me personally it gave me a more straight forward approach to music I like the sheer brutal in our face breakdowns . Now a days I listen to a lot of Signal The Firing Squad, Suicide Silence, Chelsea Grin, White Chapel, Reflections and Carnifex.

Tyler: I grew up listening to 80's rock from Metallica, Def Leopard, Styx, Pantera, Judas priest, Guns n Roses,  Ramones, Queen, RHCP, Creed I've had a very wide range of music influences since I was very little but my most influential band was pantera. Dimebag Darrell was the reason I picked up guitar and I think if there was no Dimebag Darrell there would be no Tyler Ferrell in the music industry haha I just love how he was down to earth and not a dick to his fans my friends say I remind them of Dimebag from the P antera home videos but I don't see it.

Alex: I grew up listening to all the classics such as Jimmi Hendrix, Led Zeplin, and ACDC. Then moved to Disturbed, and Korn. My biggest influence in the metal scene would have to be old I Declare War with Jonathan Huber. Listening to him gave me the style of vocals I use today.

Mark: I grew up listening to allot of old punk like the clash, the sex pistols, and the ramones and allot of black metal which eventually lead me to turn to the music i listen and play to this day.

Josef: Grew up on a lot of good old fashion death metal such as Nile, Death, Napalm Death, etc, some punk and rap. He is very musically diverse and listens to a ray of different genres!

Q: Which band has been your favorite to play with live thus far, and why?

Since 2013 we have had a recent lineup change, but our favorite show by far has to be when we played with Chelsea Grin and I Declare War at the Hawthorne Theater in Portland OR. Both these bands have been huge influences on every member and we were beyond stoked to share the stage with them. We play with the venue sold out at max capacity and had a great crowd, It was an experience we wont forget!

Q: What are your plans for 2013? Can we expect new material?

2013 we have a lot of great plans for! We are currently in the process of writing  a new album which has yet to be titled, people should anticipate that we will blow the EP out of the water, We have had some new line up changes that we are very happy with Alex (Vocals), Tyler (Guitarist) and Mark (Bass) all have something unique to bring to the table we are VERY excited for people to hear future releases.

As of now for show wise we are currently focused on the fact that we have released that we will be playing with Suffocation, Exhumed, Jungle Rot, Rings of Saturn, Admiron and Lord Of War on the Despise The World Tour 2013 in Portland, OR April 14th. We have merch that people can pre-order and we are expecting to have a lot more out. Besides that we aren’t sure we are hoping that we just continue moving forward and producing music others like and can enjoy and have fun in the process!

Q: Do you have any shout outs to give to the readers?

We want to give a huge shout out to our sponsors Pure Deathcore, especially Troy the founder for giving us the help and opportunity to reach people that we never would have if it weren’t for him! Shout out to Sierra Patrick for taking our promo and helping us out! HUGE thanks to Mike Thrasher and his team for the opportunity to play with such great bands, they are all beyond wonderful and we HIGHLY recommend them if you want any really good shows in the Portland/Oregon area!
