Band: The Broken Are Crowned
Genre: Metalcore / Progressive
Q: Where does the band
name "The Broken Are Crowned" come from?
It actually took a
while to think of a band name, I had MANY ideas and a giant list of all of
them! The name The Broken Are Crowned stood out to me a lot because it can mean
different things to different people, I like the fact that it's open to
interpretation, although at the time I probably ended up choosing it because I
thought it sounded cool haha. As for where it came from, it is a part of a lyric
from an As I Lay Dying song called Upside Down Kingdom. "This is a kingdom
born upside down, this is a kingdom where the broken are crowned."

Q: When did the idea occur to start making heavier styled music?
Q: When did the idea occur to start making heavier styled music?
When we first started
(back as a three piece with a different lineup), metal was kind of what we all
liked more than anything, and we were only in middle school at the time so it
was kind of assumed that when we started, we were going to play metal. We
switched line ups a couple of times and I started exploring all kinds of
different music, which impacted our sound for sure.
I'd say that anything that
I've ever listened to and enjoyed makes an impact on the way I write to some
extent. I like to let my songs flow on their own, when I sit down to create a
song I don't say "this is going to be a song in the style of ____
(band)," I try to keep an open mind and let my creativity flow naturally.
So going back to the original question, I guess the music I write is all based
off of what flows, and I guess that ends up being pretty heavy!

Q: You're currently signed to Gone For Good Records. How has the experience been being signed to them?
Q: You're currently signed to Gone For Good Records. How has the experience been being signed to them?
Well actually Gone
For Good Records is our own label, mine specifically. I use the name to release
my own music and eventually hope to start signing more bands! The thing I like
about being independent is that it gives us so many options and complete
control over everything that we do, but I would love to eventually get on board
with a bigger label if the right opportunity comes around.

Q: Your album, To Those Who Stand Alone, recently released. How has the feedback been?
Q: Your album, To Those Who Stand Alone, recently released. How has the feedback been?
From what I've
gotten, I love the feedback we've been getting so far. I love hearing what
people have to say about our music, we've been getting so many kind Facebook
messages, tweets, etc about the album and it's really great to hear. It's kind
of funny, because looking back, some of the songs could have gone a lot better
because of specific things that we probably should have done differently, but
when I point it out to my friends or people like that, they don't even seem to
notice, which is cool. I guess as a musician I am way more critical of myself
than anyone else is. Which is a good thing I'd say, there is ALWAYS room to
improve!

Q: What bands play a large influence in your music?
Q: What bands play a large influence in your music?
Like I said in one of
the other questions, pretty much anything that I've listened to that I enjoy
influences the music I write to some extent. For me personally, when TBAC first
started writing music I loved bands like Shadows Fall, All That Remains, As I
Lay Dying, August Burns Red, Lamb of God, and stuff like that. I still love
those bands but I discover new bands and new music that I like all of the time.
A few of my personal favorite bands since that time include TesseracT,
Meshuggah, Dead Letter Circus, Cynic, Born of Osiris, Woods of Ypres,
Necrophagist, Periphery, After the Burial, Textures, Cattle Decapitation, Spawn
of Possession, Protest the Hero, Agalloch, The HAARP Machine, Skyharbor, Tool,
Whitechapel, and many others!
So as you can see I love metal and prog haha, but
I enjoy pretty much any type of music as long as it's well made an unique. Speaking for the rest
of the band, I know Mitchell is heavily influenced by bands like Motley
Crue, Pantera, Iron Maiden, As I Lay Dying, Of Mice and Men, and Meshuggah,
Braeden is influenced by bands like Periphery, After the Burial, Volumes,
Deftones, Clutch, and Animals as Leaders, and Zach is influenced by bands
like Suicide Silence, The Devil Wears Prada, Puddle of Mudd, Tool, Chelsea
Grin, and Alice in Chains.

Q: What are your plans for this year?
Q: What are your plans for this year?
Well I can say for
sure that we will be playing as many shows in as many cities as we can get to
as possible this summer. As for recorded material, I can't say all that much,
but I can say that we do have plans to get new studio recorded material
released by the end of 2013.

Q: Do you have any shout
outs to give to the readers?
I'd like to give a
friendly shout out to anyone who has taken the time to listen to any of our
music! If you like it, it would mean a lot to us if you supported us by
spreading the word, and if you like it enough, it'd be awesome if you picked up
a copy of the album at one of our shows! It is also available to download on
many digital retailers (iTunes, Amazon MP3, etc). We love all of you! Feel free
to talk to us on Facebook or Twitter, we love talking to the people who make
this band possible!
