Band: Motivated By Silence
Genre: Hardcore / Metalcore / Thrash
Q: What were your reasons for using the name "Motivated By Silence" for your band name?
That's a good question, because honestly we didn't really have one to
begin with, haha. I joined the band when they already had the name, and
it had something to do with the original drummer's grandma or something,
but it didn't really make any sense which is why none of us can
remember the origination of the name. We had contemplated changing our
name several times because the name automatically generates a genre in
some peoples minds that puts them off from even listening to us, but as
we progressed as a band the name really grew on us and we started to
realize how unique the name is.
Then we started to develop a new meaning behind the name. I think Boondock Saints had a quote that sums it up nicely: "We all must fear evil, but the evil we must fear the most is the indifference of good men." Basically the silence of people not standing up for what's right motivates us to be better people.
Q: You're based out of Orlando, FL. How is the metal scene there?
It's slightly above average here. We have some insanely talented
bands in this area, and people will come out to weekday shows and fill
up a venue, obviously depending on the lineup. Even first time bands
that don't have much of a following yet can see 30 - 50 people at a
show.
However, there can be times when only 10 or 20
people show up. It really all just depends on the line-up, venue, and
reputation of the bands. Sometimes it feels like the scene here is
dying, but then some shows really make you think otherwise. So, I'm
going to go the safe route and say that it's slightly above average.
Q: You're not signed right now, if you had a choice to be signed to any label; which label would that be?
That's a
really tough question, mostly because we're actually not really looking
to get signed. I know how crazy that sounds lol We all have full-time
careers though, so with all of the normal label demands (touring, etc) we couldn't commit to a record label even if offered.
The
only thing that a label would really be able to bring us is exposure,
everything else we can really take care of ourselves, so right now being
on a label isn't very appealing, especially with the thought that most
of the money generated by our music would go to the label. That doesn't
sit well with me.
I
mean, there's probably some Indie label out there that could write
something up for us, and maybe we'll take a look at that down the road,
but I'm pretty sure that big labels like Century Media or Sumarian
Records etc wouldn't want to sign us unless they can see some big profit
for themselves. It's all about what both sides brings to the table, and
right now we can't commit 100% of our time to being musicians.
In Flames, old school
Metallica (I know that everyone says that, but I literally learned how
to play guitar by learning the Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning
albums), Darkest Hour, The Black Dahlia Murder, Killswitch Engage,
Insomnium, Lamb of God, and Mors Principium Est.
Sometime
this year. We have an insane amount of songs that we're sifting through
right now to decide which are going onto our first full-length album.
We seriously have something like close to 20 songs to choose from, so it
might be a while to go through them, decide a good flow of songs, and
record them, but we hope to have it done sometime in 2013.
Q: What are your immediate plans for 2013?
First, record a real music video. We have a great one that some Full-Sail students requested to do for us for one of their projects, but it's from a live show so it doesn't synch up perfectly and doesn't have any sort of theme etc. So recording a real video is first on our list. After that, record a full length album, then go on a mini-tour sometime in October.
Q: Any shout outs to give?
