Interview with A Scar For The Wicked!

Genre(s): Deathcore/Death Metal
Location: Perth, ON

PSAB: Where did the band name “A Scar for the Wicked” come from?

ASFTW: Our music is the Scar and the Wicked is you! The name really came from nothing, our guitarist Joe Moon came up with it and we all found in interesting and heavy. So, we stuck with it.

PSAB: Tell us about the song writing process for The Necrobutcher.

ASFTW: Well, a few of the songs of this EP are actually kind of old because the material was written by our guitarist Adam Semler and the lyrics written by Joe. However, the material was just not suited for the drummer we had at the time. It’s not that he wasn’t good; it just wasn’t suited for his style of playing, so we sat on the tracks we had written.

As things progressed in the band, he decided that it was a good time to leave so when we acquired Nick Rodgers into the fold, we stepped everything up a notch. We re-wrote drum parts for some old songs and introduced him to the new ones. Nick, being a technical death metal drummer, ate all our material up and turned it all into a mixture of brutal blast beats and amazing rhythmic breakdowns. After “The Necrobutcher”, “Silence Vile Temptress” and “Within the Rot” were in the bag, we moved onto the “pretty song” “The Blood Ritual” which was also written by Adam and Joe, but it took a little while to figure out the arrangements and write the solos, but in the end, I think it’s safe to say it’s one of ours and our fans favorite.

Now by this time the studio had been booked and time was running thin for the 5th song for the EP. So, one night Joe sat down and recorded “Surrounded by Giants” and brought it to us, giving us a starting point for our 5th and final song for the EP. After a few changes and a lot of practice, we put that song in the bag and the EP was done and ready for studio.

PSAB: Where did the EP title come from?

ASFTW: Funny thing is Joe’s little brother Garrett’s gamer tag on XBOX Live was The Necrobutcher, and Joe always thought it would be an awesome song title. So, “The Necrobutcher” being lyric-less at that point, Garrett and I sat down and started writing, the end result being “The Necrobutcher” written about a sadistic necromancer raising armies of the dead to tear through the world, one soul at a time.

PSAB: What has the reaction been like to the new EP?

ASFTW: So far the reaction has been really good, we’re getting lots of positive feed back from our fans and have has some awesome reviews, such as yours (thanks by the way).

We are also getting great feedback on the lyric video we did for “Surrounded by Giants” and really can’t wait to release some new video stuff in the works. We really hope everyone loves it as much as they do the EP

PSAB: Who did you guys work with during production?

ASFTW: We worked with Silver Wing Studios based out of Montreal, Ontario with Jee Gagnon and Jean-Francois Leduc. Those guys are amazing people and very talented at what they do. Their studio is great; incredibly laid back and they are both very easy to work with and push you every step of the way to make sure your doing the best possible performance every single take.

I can honestly say I don’t think we will go to another studio. The experience and the friendships we've made with Silver Wings is definitely a long-term one. We plan on going back next year to do a full length and can’t wait to work with them again, though we are always working with them as they help us with promotion and the managerial side of things. Jee also did all of our album artwork, which is beautiful. So, we say to you, if you are in a band and are in the area or even if you’re not, go check out Silver Wings Studio.

PSAB: For fans just checking you out now: What makes you guys unique in the death metal scene?

ASFTW: That’s a pretty hard question considering it’s quite hard to be a unique metal band when you have metal bands like Gwar and Dimmu Borgir, but if I had to say something, I think our mixture of death metal/melodic death metal and death-core is a good start. We try not to stick to one genre or even label ourselves into one genre.

We like to think that we’re just heavy metal band. Another factor to our unique sound would probably be the fact we have 2 vocalists with a very large range between the both, as you hear on the EP they can both pretty much do anything. Maybe for the last thing, it may not be unique per say, but our stage show is always super energetic and we always try to connect with the crowd and make them a part of our performance.

PSAB: What do you think of Ottawa, ON’s current metal scene?

ASFTW: Well, we think its pretty damn good, we got some great promoters always working hard to bring big name acts to the city, and in turn, hiring the locals like us to open these shows - giving us great opportunities to play with some of our favorite bands and musicians, helping us build a fan base in our hometown and connect with other locals.

There is a lot of talent running through the veins of Ottawa in all different genres and types. We love that Ottawa is home-base for us.
PSAB: Even though you guys just released the EP, when are we getting more music? We are very needy, you know.

ASFTW: We are in the writing process now and we are hoping that by spring next year we'll have the material we’re looking for to do a full length record. So, hopefully next summer or a little earlier we can have a new release. You never know, we may just go record a single for all of you if you need something that bad, or maybe we'll release a music video? We have a lot of things in the works right now. So all I can say is soon!

PSAB: Any shout outs to give to readers, fans, promoters, etc?

ASFTW: Of course man! Like I said before, the streets of Ottawa run rampant with talented bands and promoters and we have had the pleasure to work beside most of them. We'd like to give a shout out to Spectrasonic, Black Widow Promotions, Rabbit Hole Productions, 457 The Edge, Jay Cross, Matt Bonesaw and every other promoter we've had the pleasure of working with! Keep up the good work! We appreciate the opportunities you guys make for us, as fans and musicians.

To all the fans, we just want to say thank you for all the support you’ve given us, we are fucking stoked you guys like our EP and can’t wait to see what is ahead for us.

For all the new fans, we just want to say welcome to the wicked family!

To the readers, if you’re into metal you should check out these bands from the Ottawa and Montreal area: Fumigation, Deathrow Six, Volitile, My Darkest Day, Accursed Spawn, The Thirteenth Floor, Endast, Skies Beneath, Killitorous, Distorthead and Signs of Chaos!
