Interview with Ennui Breathes Malice!

Band: Ennui Breathes Malice
Genre: Deathcore

Q: Where does your band name "Ennui Breathes Malice" come from exactly?

'Ennui' (on-we) is a French term for 'perpetual boredom' - Essentially our name deals with the idea that the lethargy and boredom of today's youth/generation, has a contagious effect; an almost recycled form of evil intent and malicious behaviors. It won't make sense to some, but hopefully that clarifies things!

Q: You last two releases, Of Agony and Ecstasy, in 2008, and Obsessive Repulsive, in 2011 were given a lot of positive attention. Do you think your next release will have the same effect?

Hopefully!! We realise that in music today, there's an equal amount of positivity and negativity towards any bands works. We've become accustom to both, and understand that with love, also comes hate - In our minds, it's all positive advertising! We wholeheartedly feel, that the only definitive difference between our two releases has been the obvious production qualities and a change in vocalist! Our approach to writing and style hasn't changed at all - Possibly we've just become more refined in certain areas! Right now we're super excited about the new music we're producing and can't wait to see how it's received by everyone.

Q: How is the local metal scene in Ballarat, Victoria?

Look, we honestly have an abundance of really cool acts here, but we have ONE venue! Despite boasting some of the most genuine and kind people in the world, the metal community (here in particular) appears to be the only scene in which very little support exists (among the bands themselves specifically). You find that other genres, from Indie through to even the Hip Hop and Dance DJ's, really back one another and attend all of each others events in town - The metal game sadly, seems to be a vicious cycle of late in which we hope to regain in the not too distant future! We're very conscious of aiming to support all bands where possible.

Q: You have not toured outside of Australia. If you could tour any other country, which one would it be?

We actually have! We did a short stint with 'Lamb Of God' and 'The Black Dahlia Murder' in The Philippines: February, 201 which a lot of people don't know. Despite offers to headline in Mexico and Israel recently, we really want to make it out to the USA! I think around 70% of our listeners are based in the states, which is staggering for us being so far away. To make a trip over there would be the icing on the cake for us! If there are any promoters reading this, hit us up and help us to sort something out - We're thirsty for some American dates!!

Q: You have used a lot of movie samples in your music (which I love). Why do you use them in your songs?

Umm! I'm not so sure man.....I guess we whack some bits and pieces in where suitable. Some have deeper, cryptic reasoning whereas others are just a bit of fun really!

Q: Your first release, Of Agony and Ecstasy, recently ran out of hard copies. Can the fans expect a re-issue of hard copies of this album anytime soon, if ever?

At this stage, probably not. Into the future we'll have a better indication of how beneficial it would be, but at this point, realistically we need to concentrate on spending any money we do have on new music for the fans! The way things operate online these days, a digital version of the EP will remain available through iTunes.

Q: You're not signed to a record label currently. If you had the choice to be signed to any label, which label would that be and why?

That's a tough one.....Between members we have some strong views in regards to labels and promotion. I couldn't begin to imagine who would take us on, nor which label we'd suit! Hahaha! At this stage, as a band with all members working full time jobs as well, we intend to do things in our own time frame, however it'd be lovely to have some interest from around the place of course. Distribution deals are something we'd be very eager to look into, especially within the US and Europe. We'll wait and see what happens with our next disc!

Q: It's been almost two years since your last release, Obsessive Repulsive, when can we expect your next album?

I'd love to say this year, but we can't put anything in concrete just yet! We're definitely working on it now and hope to release a track over the next couple of months, just to keep the ball rolling and hopefully build a bit of hype. We're stoked on the material we're creating and are keen for people to hear it all.

Q: What are your plans for this year?

The prime intention is to get these songs finished, recorded and released..... Along the way we'll get our new members fully comfortable and mold the family again, whilst trying to hit the road every now and then to play some shows between writing.

Q: Do you guys have any shout outs to give to the readers?

Certainly! Thanks for sticking with us - We know a lot of people have been with us from the start and that type of support is priceless! For those who have never heard of us until now.....Enjoy! We appreciate your time! Spread the word and tell your friends about us! We'll have more music for you soon!
