Interview with Swine Overlord!

Band: Swine Overlord
Genre: Brutal Death Metal / Slam

Q: Where does the band name "Swine Overlord" come from?

Well I came up with the name before Devin was in the band. It had been called Hypoxic, and it was meant to be serious, but I had this crazy pig mask from Halloween, so somehow the name came to me and my plan was to never reveal my identity and just be one of those cheesy gimmick bands haha. But then Devin joined and we got serious. We talked about changing the name in the beginning since it's kind of silly, but it's stuck with us and I'm glad we kept it. It's unique, better than the stereotypical "Putrid Anal Vomit Fetus" names haha.

Q: Why did you choose to make brutal death metal music over other heavier genres?

I hadn't heard of brutal death metal until relatively recently prior to starting the project. I had always been into bands like Dying Fetus and Suffocation (who I see as kind of the pioneers of what would become modern brutal death metal). Not long after that I found Devourment, who I loved immediately, and I began my quest. I quested for heavier lesser-known bands dwelling within what I saw at the time as the underground.

I found bands like Abominable Putridity, Pathology, Ingested and Disfiguring the Goddess, which then led to Katalepsy, Short Bus Pileup, Putrid Pile, and Viral Load. I quickly found myself surrounded by new bands of a whole new type of metal I had never known existed. I loved the power of it, the driving beat of the slam sections, and that it still kept technicality in passages to break the monotony of the slams. It was not long after this that I started trying to write the stuff.

Q: You signed with Gore House Productions in March of this year. How has the experience been being signed to them?

It has been great. Carlos has already been more supportive than we could ask for. He's been working hard on getting us out there, re-releasing our EP, Anthology of Abominations in the physical format, and just helping us prepare for our first full length. I feel like he took a chance on us as a band that's not so well known, plus one that is unable to play shows on a regular basis. We're doing our best to make him and our label-mates proud!

Q: Your debut album, Parables of Umbral Transcendence is set to release this year. What can we expect from this album? Will it be similar, or better, than the demo you released in 2012?

We definitely see it as better. Our song-writing has improved both lyrically and musically, just from the experience we've gotten from working together. Our songs are heavier, more technical, but still have the sound we feel gives us somewhat of a unique sound in a genre that can seem so monotonous.

I feel like it's similar to our demo in that way. We try to make sure there's a degree of musical value in there. Whether it's a solo, a clean passage, or just something that you wouldn't usually find on another brutal death album, we feel like we're offering something that is unique.

Q: What bands play an influence on your music the most?

We definitely brought some new influences into play on the full length. Overall I'd say probably the biggest influences on our music are Devourment, Guttural Secrete, Cerebral Bore, and Abominable Putridity. For me personally I'd just have to add The Black Dahlia Murder, Aborted and  Behemoth. While their influence isn't directly heard in our music a lot of the time, they have really influenced the way that I play and write.

Q: What is the local metal scene like in West Winfield, NY and/or Macclenny, FL?

Well I know that in West Winfield the local metal scene is non-existent. In some of the surrounding cities there are a few metal bands that are pretty sick (Cymatics, Black Iris of the Sun, Omnipresent, as well as many others.) I feel like there's a lot of variety in the bands in the area. You could take pretty much any type of metal and find a band that plays it somewhere in upstate New York. I believe Macclenny (Dev's hometown) also has a pretty small scene.

Q: Do you have any shout outs to give to the readers?

I'd just have to say support the scene, support the sick bands out there,  be sure check out our label, Gore House Productions and the various bands they have signed, and just keep it brutal!
