New Music Released Over Halloween Weekend!

There have been many releases over the course of Halloween weekend, and while I was unable to get to posting them over the course of Halloween and Saturday, I am going to make sure I'll cover them now! I will do them in order from Friday and today.

FRIDAY

First up is former A Hitman Business's band, Withering, with their new song "K-Word Yourself." You can listen to it here (YouTube).

Next is groove metal band, A Stranger To Remorse with the release of their new EP "Rapeface." Check it out here (YouTube).

Next up is down tempo deathcore act Purge with their new song "Expurgate" from their upcoming new album In Expurgate, set to release Nov. 17, 2014. Check out the single here (YouTube).

Hardcore/metalcore band Moorhaven released a new music video for their song "As I Am (You Will Be)" from their EP Ocean City, which released back in January of 2014. You can check out the music video here (YouTube).

Last new song that dropped on Halloween is brutal death metal act Necroptic Engorgement's new single "Blowtorch Castration." This was released with a music video as well, and you can watch it here (YouTube).

SATURDAY

As far as I could tell, only one new song dropped on Saturday, which is deathcore band The Dialectic with their song "Follow Me To Hell" taken from their upcoming self-titled album. You can listen to the new song here (YouTube).

SUNDAY

First up for today is AngelMaker with the release of a pre-production teaser of their upcoming new album. You can check out the teaser here (YouTube), and help fund the album here (Indiegogo).

Following AngelMaker is progressive metal band Unprocessed with their new song, and live video, titled "Law of Privilege." Watch and listen here (YouTube).

Interview with I'll Be An Empire!

Genre(s): Progressive Metal
Location: Kennesaw, GA

PSAB: Why did you choose the name "I'll Be An Empire" for your band?

IBAE
: One of our vocalists, Alex, came up with the idea for our name back in 2010. We feel like it's a catchy & memorable name that draws people to our music.

PSAB: You released your EP, Thelema, back in August. How has the feedback been for that?

IBAE
:
Overall reception so far has been amazing! We couldn't be happier with what Thelema has done for us as a band, even in the short time it's been out. It's so cool to have your friends/peers listen to & like what we've worked so hard on for so long.

PSAB: If you could do a split album with one other band, which band would that be?

IBAE
:
That's an extremely tough choice, there are a few we've had in mind. Locally, it'd have to be either Our Thoughts Amounted, Adharma, or The Antikythera Mechanism. But as far as national/international bands, The Contortionist or Between the Buried & Me would be awesome.

PSAB: What is the metal scene like in Kennesaw, GA?

IBAE
:
It's very diverse, for sure. Kennesaw/Atlanta has a variety of great bands for every genre, as well as every sub-genre of metal.

PSAB: What are some of the bands you listened to growing up? Do those bands play an influence on your music now?

IBAE
:
We all listened to somewhat different stuff growing up which shaped our initial taste/interest in rock music, but now our common influences would have to be Meshuggah, Periphery, TesseracT, Between the Buried & Me, Misery Signals, Veil of Maya, Cattle Decapitation, The Contortionist, & Rings of Saturn.

PSAB: Have any shout outs to give?

IBAE
:
We would like to thank Pig Squeals & Breakdowns, first of all, for interviewing us. Also, shoutout to sphaghetti. We want to thank every single person who's bought our EP, your support is what's helping us grow as a band! As well as the guys in If Machines Spoke In Riddles, Adharma, Glacius, Extrania, Sustenance, The Antikythera Mechanism, Prophet, It Was Late Last Night, A Legacy Unwritten, Decayer, Collapse of the Empire, & Our Thoughts Amounted for being the eternal homies & making Atlanta metal as badass as it is! #WhoIsMoneyBastard

Two New Albums Drop Today: Cannibal Corpse And The Contortionist

First up on the list is death metal heavyweights Cannibal Corpse. Their new album A Skeletal Domain releases today through Metal Blade Records. You can purchase it physically here or digitally here. This is the band's 13th album, so you know what to expect from this band; heavy death metal with gory lyrical content.

Next on the list is progressive metal band The Contortionist. Their new album Language released today as well, and was released through eOne/Good Fight Music. You can purchase the album physically here or here, or digitally here. This is the band's third album (not including EP releases), and first album with new vocalist Mike Lessard.

I listened to this album quite a bit different compared to their previous albums Intrinsic and Exoplanet. It is a lot more softer sounding and very atmospheric. But! It's still a fantastic album and I enjoy the direction they went with.

Interview with Immerse!

Genre(s): Technical/Progressive Metal
Location: London, UK

PSAB: Why did you choose the name "Immerse" for your band?

Immerse
: The band started as a solo project known as "Immerse Project", so when it stopped being a solo project and turned into a full lineup, we took the original name. I suppose the name stems from our goal of trying to create an immersive sound which can really captivate people.

PSAB: You recently released a new single "Arch." How has the feedback been for that single?

Immerse
: The response has been brilliant! We've had the song recorded for a while but it's a bit of a change from our old record and we weren't sure how it was going to be received, but people seem to be digging the new pitched screams from Tom and the heavier breakdown parts of the sound.

PSAB: You're currently unsigned, if you could be signed to any record label, which label would that be and why?

Immerse
: Any label that wouldn't restrict our creative direction too much, for example Basick and Summerian have both seemingly been pretty cool with their artists experimenting with progression. Saying that, I don't think it's absolutely essential to get signed. I feel that it's all about writing quality music, having the right contacts and playing a show that people walk away thinking "wow".

PSAB: If you had the chance to hold a tour with five bands; which five bands would you choose?

Immerse
: This will be different for every member of the band, but for myself I'm making my decisions based on which bands' fans would enjoy our music the best. I'd go for SikTh, Protest the Hero, Periphery, The Safety Fire, Architects. But if it's bands I'm personally into, Outkast, NWA, Trapped Under Ice, Turnstile and Justin Timberlake.

PSAB
: What has played the most influence on your music? This can be non-music related.

Immerse
: There is a distinct difference between our old (Self Titled EP) sound and new (Untitled EP2) sound. Our older stuff was a lot more technical and sometimes it became technical for the sake of it. Our newer stuff is hopefully a collection of well written songs which use technicality in a clever way to intrigue listeners (both vocally and musically). As far as influence goes, we have a very versatile music taste as a band. Our music taste ranges from hip-hop, through rap, rock, metal and all the way through to death metal.

PSAB: Have any shout outs to give?

Immerse
: Shout out to UK Tech-Fest. Those guys have been doing a brilliant job for the last three years. The UK tech metal community are some of the nicest people we've met in our lives and I'm pretty sure we wouldn't have met half of them without the help of UK Tech-Fest. Also shout out to our drummer Joel's other band No Rest (FFO: Hardcore). Finally shout out to our brothers in Aeolist, Nexilva, Exist Immortal, Acrania and ACODA, all fantastic bands, check them out.

Immerse Releases New Song "Arch"

UK based progressive/technical metal band, Immerse, dropped this new song titled "Arch." This is the first release from the band since their self-titled debut EP release back in 2013. "Arch" provides an aggressive, but very groovy, assault of technical and progressive instrumentals, and raw sounding vocals to the listener. Check out the song below, and pick up their debut EP on their Bandcamp page.

Interview with Paddington Frisk!

Facebook
Genre(s): Progressive Metal
Location: Brownsville, TX

PSAB: Where did the band name “Paddington Frisk” come from exactly?

PF: Our vocalist came up with the name. "To dance to the Paddington frisk" is a colloquial term used back in the day to describe those who were being publicly executed by hanging because I suppose they do a little shaking during the struggle they go through.

PSAB: You're currently unsigned, if you could be signed to any record label, which label would that be and why?

PF: Probably Sumerian Records. Most of my favorite bands are on there.

PSAB: What is the local metal scene like in Brownsville, TX?

PF: I can't say the metal scene in Brownsville is very impressive because its not hah but by making an hour drive to mcallen, the scene is quite a step up there. In Brownsville , you'll find mostly thrash, black and death metal. Not really any prog.

PSAB: Which bands play the most influence on your music?

PF: For me it would be Protest the Hero, Born of Osiris, The Faceless, Periphery, Animals as Leaders and other bands along those lines.

PSAB: Do you have any shout outs to give to your fans?

PF: Shout outs for fans? I don't know if we even have any lol . Well we certainly have gotten nothing but good feedback about our music... Which I would assume that means we have some fans. You've been talking to Michael by the way. Thank you all for taking an interest.

Volumes' Continues To Tease Their Fans

Progressive metal band, Volumes' has been teasing their fans for quite some time with their upcoming album No Sleep. With the band continually posting photos, pushing the album's release date back, and overall not providing much of anything with music to their fans (with the exception of the album teaser they released last month). Anyway, the band released the photo above yesterday, I'm assuming that's the title of the next single they'll release.
However, though I am a bit salty with the no new single or an official release date. I find myself on the side that their record label Mediaskare Records, is probably to blame. Fans have seen it countless times that a record label holds back an albums release, or makes it so it actually never comes out. But, at the end of today, this can simply be only my opinion on the manner.

Edit: As of this writing, Volumes' announced a new song ("The Mixture") and preorders for No Sleep will release tomorrow at 4:20 (EST).

Interview with The Antikythera Mechanism!

Genre(s): Progressive Metal/Deathcore
Location: Atlanta, GA

PSAB: Where does your band name "The Antikythera Mechanism" come from, and what exactly does it mean?

TAM: The Antikythera Mechanism is an Ancient Greek analog computer/astronomical calender that would predict star patterns and eclipses. Its origin has been dated back to the 1st century BC however technologies similar to this device aren't found again until the 14th century.
Being a progressive metal band, we use the name to help try and keep us thinking ahead of the curve. To keep us writing material that we all enjoy but also writing unique material that we think our fans haven't heard much of, within the style of music we play.

PSAB: Your lyric video for your song "Depths of Europa" recently came out. How has the feedback been for the video and song?

TAM: So far the reactions have been really positive and encouraging, which is obviously great. We're just now getting a chance to break into this underground scene with our new music. Even so, we're still making our way. The people that have found us and reached out have been nothing but kind and we're extremely grateful for such a positive response.

PSAB: You're currently working on a new album, titled Pathos. When can we expect that album to drop?

TAM: Pathos came out on April 1st of this year. It is a 5 track EP that mainly touches on ideas of space, consciousness, and perceived reality. We wrote this album out of an exciting surge of interest from all members about what life truly means and what humanity's place is in the universe.

We spent most of 2013 writing, recording, and perfecting this music. Bradd Schlosser of In Motion Recordings in Athens, Ga was a great producer to record with and we were also quite fortunate to be able to have Brian Hood of 456 Recordings in Nashville, TN to do the mix and master.

PSAB: How is the metal scene in Atlanta, GA?

TAM: It's really thriving right now. All of our members came from various projects in and around Atlanta. In this last year, we've started noticing more and more people showing their support: from local musicians, promoters, and fans in general. We are very happy to be a part of this scene and glad we can contribute to its growth and having great bands to push us to constantly better ourselves.

PSAB: What has played the most influence on your music? This can non-music related.

TAM:  This new EP has been a really great experience. It was exciting writing songs that worked on every level. Musically and lyrically, together and separate this album really turned out better than we could have hoped. Music evolves when the artist does. That being said, it's hard to say as a whole what gets us motivated towards writing. However, we were motivated to write something that we hope will capture peoples interest, song by song and also as an entire idea.
Musically I'd say we're influenced by bands as recent as The Contortionist and The Faceless to bands that have made their everlasting mark on the metal and rock scenes over the years, such as Meshuggah, Tool, and Pink Floyd. We try and pull from all styles of music and just write what we would like to hear on an album.

The works of people like Carl Sagan, Stephen Hawking, Dr. Michio Kaku and Neil DeGrasse Tyson have truly helped bring the complex universe to everyone's fingertips including our own. I'd say that these people among many others have been our biggest influence into the concept of this EP.

PSAB: Do you have any shout outs to give to your fans?

TAM:  Every single one of them! Any person that has ever seen us, heard us, bought any of our merch, purchased our album, or even just given our music a listen. Now more than ever, fans are the only thing that keeps music alive! So we're really thankful for everyone's love and support.

A special thanks to our good friends Will Herald and Patrick Antos. Without their continuous help we wouldn't be where we are today. So big shout out to those guys.

Interview with Haunting Skies!

Genre(s): Progressive Metal
Location: Kansas City, MO

PSAB: Why did you decide to choose the name "Haunting Skies" for your band?

HS: Really at the time we actually had a different line up, and when we came up with that name, it sounded pretty cool, and now the name has really grown a sort of meaning for us now.

PSAB: You're currently working on new music for a new album for 2014. When can we expect that album to drop?

HS: Absolutely, we are currently working on a concept album titled "The Endless Grey" which is still currently being written, and hopefully that could drop around 2015 with the proper support behind us.

PSAB: How has the experience been being managed by Damon Moreno?

HS: Its been rather well, he always hooks us up with the best deals that bands like ourselves need to have, and is always looking to get our music into the hands of a possible new connection and searching for possible tour opportunities. We like what he has done for us even for only working with him for about 5 months. We can't wait to see whats to come next with this partnership!

PSAB: What is the local metal scene like in Kansas City, MO?

HS: Its a very welcoming place. We all treat each other like as if we were part of some brotherhood, and its very welcoming to a newer up and coming band like ourselves. We love the people of KC and are proud to be from here!

PSAB: What one band plays the most influence on your music?

HS: I suppose, if it was one band, Dream Theater... but we get much... much heavier.

PSAB: Do you have any shout outs to give to your fans?

HS: Shout outs go to Jacob Means, Michael Manley, Anthony Pierce, and all our close friends and family of Haunting Skies, we love you all!

Interview with Slice The Cake!

Genre(s): Progressive Death Metal

PSAB: Why did you choose the name "Slice The Cake" for your band name?

STC: Around when we were starting out, we were throwing a bunch of “serious” names around just to see what would stick, stuff like “Gaia Aflame” .. None of the stuff we came up with was particularly appealing so our name was left as this big unknown until Jonas started working on a logo. We still didn’t have a name, so he just put Slice The Cake in place of whatever the real name was to be and it just kind of stuck. I’m not even sure if the whole verb the noun subversion was intentional on his part originally but we realised pretty quickly that it works on a few different levels.

PSAB: Your first EP came in 2010 and you quickly became decently known among the metal community due to music sharing websites. The same websites also share illegal downloads of albums. So, that brings up the question. What are your opinions on whole illegal download/piracy of music?

STC: We’re generally totally cool with it, as it’s done nothing but good things for us. The entertainment industry as a whole is changing, not just the music industry, and piracy is generally seen as this big “issue” that needs tackling in some way, and there are various philosophies concerning this, and ours is that piracy isn’t going away so we may as well use it to our advantage, and it’s paid dividends for us. The other thing about piracy that rarely seems to be acknowledged is that some people that have pirated your shit may then actually go and buy it if they like it enough. It’s not just some black or white issue like “PIRACY IS TERRIBLE AND BAD” because for us, it totally hasn’t been.

Even outside of the world of music this seems to be pretty evident, I personally keep up with the games scene a lot and the piracy discussion is equally as big with games and there have been a couple of great examples of how to deal with piracy in a positive way. The creator of Hotline Miami (for those of you who haven’t played it, you totally should, it’s a hyper-violent, Lynchian clusterfuck of a fever dream with an amazing soundtrack!) put the game up on the pirate bay and urged people to download it, but to support it with some moneys if they were vibing with it. The way the guy dealt with it made waves in the gaming press, and suddenly fucking everyone was playing it and it made the dude a ton of money. Hell, perhaps it’s taboo to admit it, but I’m one of those that pirated it.. And guess what.. I bought it literally as soon as I had the money to out of respect for both the dude’s openness and the art itself. The more you try and stop people from freely sharing art around, the more people will share it just to spite you and I don’t blame them for it at all. Art is something that transcends money and financial value, and I think that’s an idea worth defending and upholding.

As well as that, I frankly think we’d be kind of hypocritical if we didn’t take this stance. We didn’t make this band with the intention of making money or becoming famous or anything like that, we never could’ve anticipated that STC would blow up the way it did.. All of our music has been made more for our own sake than anything else. It’s an exorcistic process more than anything else.. And I don’t think you can put a price on that. We encourage people to acquire our music however the hell they want to, but to treat our bandcamp as a donation box if they really feel what we’re doing. All the money we’ve made has been poured back into stuff we’re now using to make Odyssey to the West and that’s purely the result of people’s generosity. If we hadn’t made a penny doing any of this, we’d feel the same about all of it.

PSAB: Your upcoming album Odyssey to the West is set to release later on this year. When can we expect a taste of the album with a new single? Anytime in the near future?

STC: Yeah, sometime fairly soon. We were aiming to release the album on March 1st originally, but over the past couple of months it became apparent that it needs more time to be as good as we want it to be, so right now we’re just saying “when it’s done.” We don’t want to put too much of a time frame on it because we don’t really know ourselves. Perhaps some time during the summer? But don’t take that as gospel!

PSAB: While on topic of your new album, will there is a b-side release after the initial release? Like when you released Other Slices after The Man With No Face. Or do you plan on releasing all tracks with the initial release?

STC: Probably not. Other Slices was probably just a one-time kinda deal. It was a fun album to make but for all of us it feels a bit hollow, since it’s literally just a collection of songs without anything that fundamentally binds them all together on a conceptual level.

That idea of each album being a self-contained, singular, unified vision is something that has always been pretty strong for us but it’s been more important to us than ever. Other Slices doesn’t fit that mold at all, and like I said, it was fun, but we probably won’t be doing anything like it any time soon. Plus it was just a really, really good opportunity to make an awful bakery related pun in an album title… You only get one of those before people start thinking you’re a joke band.

But yeah, we do have a few leftover tracks from the last year or two, but if they were to be used for anything they’d need a fair bit of re-working and they’d need to be relevant to whatever project we were trying to shoe horn them into. We have a few vague ideas for future releases and we have a couple of albums coming from side-projects (a post-black metal behemoth by the name of Fissures and an album of soundscape/doom metal by my solo project Musica Masonica) in the coming months too, so we’re getting all of those out of the way before putting any serious thought into future releases.

PSAB: Just recently you were signed to Subliminal Groove Records. Why did you choose to sign with that label over other labels? Also, what are your favorite bands on the SGR roster?

STC: Well we’ve been keeping an eye SG since its early days and it’s really started flourishing as of late. We’re good friends with the guy’s from Ovid’s Withering and Lorelei but after the shit show that was Myriad Records we wanted to make absolutely sure that SG was the kind of label that wasn’t all just big talk. Perhaps it’s just conjecture but you hear all kinds of horror stories about label dudes promising you the earth and then never actually delivering on any of it. Myriad was totally one of those labels, but SG has had a totally different vibe from the offset.

There’s also a really strong communal, family type of vibe with SG and that’s what swung it for us I think. Aside from that, SG just totally has its shit together on every level and that’s become massively apparent after spending just a few days on the roster, they’re a well oiled promotional behemoth for this kind of music and the amount of eyes we’ve had on the signing announcement alone is just insane. I mean, this is just the beginning of our experience with SG and we’ve got nothing but good feelings about the partnership, so we’re stoked as fuck.  As for favourites? Probably Ovdi, Lorelei and Nemertines.

PSAB: Do you have anything to say to the readers of the site, and the fans of Slice The Cake?

STC: Yeah, like I was saying earlier, it’s down to word of mouth and sites like this that our music gets heard as much as it does, and the fans that have supported us with such passion and fervour. When we started doing this we never would’ve dreamed that it’d catch on in any meaningful way, since we’re just some dudes that made some art out of going quietly insane in our bedrooms at 4am, but we just hit 25k likes on our Facebook page and we’re working on our 3rd full length album. Considering we’re “that cake band,” this never ceases to totally blow our minds and we have the utmost gratitude for it all!

Sean Hall releases new album Chariots of Fire

One-man band, Sean Hall, released a new album recently titled Chariots of Fire. Unlike his previous albums, this album has vocals that are done by Matt Turkington. It isn't really a two-man band, it is just Sean Hall's instrumentals used with Matt Turkington's vocals. Either way, if you're into progressive metal, or djent, definitely give this album a listen and purchase it on Sean Hall's Bandcamp!
