Interview with Skyon!

Genre(s): Metalcore
Location: Sydney, Australia

PSAB: Where does the band name "Skyon" come from?

Skyon
: Our original name was Porcelain Syndrome but after one of our friends told us it sounded like some sort of bowel control problem we knew we needed to change it! We had a whole heap of potential names that we considered but Skyon just seemed to be the right fit. There's no story or meaning behind it, it just fit the aesthetic of the band's music.

PSAB: You released your EP Moments of Clarity back in June. How has the feedback been for that? Also why did you choose it to be downloadable for free?

Skyon
: We've been super stoked with the feedback on the EP! It's a pretty daunting experience to put music out to the public, will people like it? Or will everyone just say it's crap?! But luckily for us we've received lots of awesome words of encouragement from new fans and people coming up to us at shows, it's been really great. We made the EP free because basically we were thinking less about making profits and more about getting as much exposure for our music as possible.

PSAB: If you could do a split album with one other band, which band would that be?

Skyon
: That's a tough question! Everyone in the band loves Deftones so I guess they would be our choice. Super experimental whilst retaining a core sound, they're very inspiring.

PSAB: How's the metal scene in Sydney, Australia?

Skyon
: The metal/hardcore scene in Sydney seems to be getting bigger and bigger which is really cool. We've played with some seriously talented bands - go check out these bands: Polaris, Arteries, Dystopic and Queensland band Take us to Vegas. On the other hand, there seems to be a lot of bands who are playing the same 8 string drop Q breakdown-fest and I think it's wearing a bit thin. Bands like us who have more melodic/pop elements have to work a bit harder to build a fan base in the underground scene but we love the challenge.

PSAB: What has played the most influence on your music? This can be non-music related.

Skyon
: I'm not sure about the other guys but for me, it would definitely be film. I love going to see a movie on the big screen. It's the only place where you can switch off your phone and contact from the world, the lights go down and you can just immerse yourself in a story, it's a very powerful experience. Directors like Chris Nolan and David Fincher are guys I really look up to. We've begun writing for our new release and we're trying to inject some more cinematic elements into the post-hardcore sound we have.

PSAB: Do you have any shout outs to give to your fans, and the readers out there?

Skyon
: Massive shout out to anyone who has downloaded an EP, come checked us out at a show or sent us a message, that positive feedback really helps fuel the fire. Head to our facebook page for updates on our upcoming release! Thanks
